About Me

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to explore Brick & Kin! My name is Jeny and I started this blog in March of 2021 in my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I've always had a strong interest in history, especially houses. Every city I would visit, I would always make sure to do at least one historic home tour. The idea for this blog and company has been in the back of my mind for years, but never took the time to do it.

Then, BOOM!!  March 2020 is here and the entire world shuts down and I have more free time at home!

I started to research previous owners of my old house, which is something I never had the time to do before. Simultaneously, I started my family's genealogy and I quickly became obsessed.

I am a graduate of Ferris State University with a  B.S. in Public Relations, but have worked in accounting  for 12 years.

I hope everyone enjoys these brief life stories of just ordinary people from all walks of life; I hope it sparks interest for others to continue to learn and appreciate about their house, neighborhood, and city.

My mission is to celebrate, explore, and enhance the lives of all humans - no matter of religion, race, ethnicity, sexuality, or any other differences that make us who we are as human beings. I believe that the amplification of diverse voices, stories, and history is the path towards a greater understanding of our shared humanity.

I believe every family story deserves to be told with dignity. As a white female author, I am mindful of my own lens and the power dynamics inherent in storytelling. When I write about families of color, I do so with a commitment to historical justice and deep research.

I approach this work with humility, knowing that I may not always get it right. I view this blog as a space for mutual respect and learning. If you notice an error or if something I’ve written feels insensitive, please contact me directly. I am grateful for the opportunity to grow and to ensure this space remains respectful to everyone.

Some stories may include talk of suicide which may be triggering for some individuals. My goal is to share this information/story safely, but please step away if you feel overwhelmed. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress, please reach out for professional help:
